Having to do pre-employment training just to get an interview

Something needs to change with employment law!
'Apprenticeships' for some of the most basic jobs that exist like warehouse labourer and shelfstacker as a way to pay people a tiny wage, and now free labour for a week for a cleaning job prior to an interview!
The world's gone mad...0 -
You can refuse anything if it leaves you worse off at the end of the week.. Obviously with no pay you'll be worse off....and as you've worked more than 16 hours in the week you don't qualify for JSA so you've got to sign off that.
These courses are sponsored by "The Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners". Who they are and their mission is unclear. They are a Livery company. They've paid for this course. They may have had too much money and needed to spend it on charitable aims. It would have been nice of them to ensure any employer was partly reimbursed by them for the pay the employer should give to the trainee for the training week. We're not talking that much anyway. 1 week at minimum wages for 35 hours a day is only £227.50. They could go halves with the employer.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

I think it might be a 'sector based work academy' https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sector-based-work-academies-employer-guide
We are just thinking about doing one for housekeeping posts - we already do them for care and admin roles. Works really well getting people back to work and we get to weed out people not right prior to employment0 -
How could someone who was already working do this training? This looks like exploitation of the unemployed to me, awful!0
-
Is the training paid?Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0

It is all getting rather silly is it not with these "qualifications" NVQ / City and guild.
NVQ in bog cleaning ?
What next and NVQ in putting the kettle on to make the boss tea ?
Millions of pounds are squandered on these bogus training scams.
Now the tories are in, if they want to save some serious money, this stupidity of ridicules courses and qualifications is costing an awful lot of money to the tax payer keeping the providers in wages.
Put a stop to it and just give someone a ruddy job.I do Contracts, all day every day.0 -
I have heard of care agencies that do this and worse - they tell the people they have to pay to do the course. Then in the end there is no job its just a scam.
Sounds like they have found a way to get some free labour. I wouldn't do it as you could still end up without a job at the end. Better spend the week applying for other jobs.0 -
I did something similar for a sales role but it was only a day. I think I was there for 8-9am and didn't leave until 10.30pm. I was traipsing around following somebody already doing the job.
They wouldn't give us any information. Turned out it was one of these self employed commission only type things. At the end the boss "didn't think I was suitable but the sales rep had convinced him to give me a chance but I'd have to accept there and then" - I did.
I then slept on it. And in the morning I rang back and declined.0 -
I guess if you were working full time you wouldn't be able to do it. The people who were at the session yesterday were all on JSA so either unemployed or working less than 16 hours.
I have no idea what happens to the people who are already working full time who applied for the job. Maybe they get to skip ahead to the interview? Or maybe they aren't called in at all? I applied for the job on Reed so it's not like everyone, or even most people, who applied would be claiming JSA.
I don't think it's the same as the shadowing someone around for a day whilst you go door to door selling stuff thing though. That is a well known scam and a one I even nearly fell for myself a few years ago.
I've just never heard of having to do a pre-employment course just to get an interview. Not even a job, just an interview, and an interview for a cleaning job at that.
I tried ringing earlier but couldn't get through. I think I might just go on Monday to check it out and if it looks like it is just cheap labour then I'll just leave.0 -
What does the Jobcentre say? you had however long to run it past them. And also what did the others think who attended the session?
I'm sorry it sounds like either a fast or not all facts are known, please don't think anything posted to the job site you mention has to be legitimate! or is proof of a guaranteed job advertisement.
As you are unpaid? I'll repeat you might be allowed to say if it is the job for you or not at regular breaks or intervals0
