My cat has been microchipped twice!

I found this out yesterday at a routine vet visit. I've had her since New Year's Eve and recently changed her details on the chip I knew about, which is registered with Pet Protect.
The other one is registered with Anibase and is in the name of her original owner who is now deceased. Apparently if you want to change ownership and don't send signed consent from the registered owner, Anibase write to them. If they don't reply refusing consent within 28 days then Anibase will amend the details.
I can't get my head around why she was chipped a second time and am hoping I can sort it out without too much angst!

That's bizarre, I would have thought that a vet would scan for an existing chip before inserting a new one, especially if the cat is older.
Can they remove the Anibase chip? As the original owner is deceased they're unlikely to refuse consent to change the details though :rotfl:0 -

I think removing it is a lot harder than inserting it, so I doubt they'd do it and I wouldn't want to put her through it.
The owner's son took her to the cat shelter to be microchipped and says he told them she had already been done but he didn't have the paperwork. None of it makes sense to me.3 stone down, 3 more to go0 -
One of my dogs is chipped twice - by my own vet, at the same appointment! The first chip seemingly was faulty, so they chipped her again, only for that one to not be working - at that stage they checked the scanner and realised it was the scanner that was faulty.
Both chips are in my name though, and as they're with the same company, when we moved house they very kindly said they'd update both chips with my new address for the price of one.
I think vets are hesitant to remove them because it will involve some minor surgery.0 -
As long as I can get both chips registered to me, I'll be happy. As things stand, if she went missing and was scanned, they would look for whoever the first chip they scan is registered to. They wouldn't check for a second chip.
I only found out because the vet offered to scan her to confirm she had been chipped and it came up with a completely different number.
I'm glad I know but it is a headache! Also relieved that I've been able to find out that nobody else has a claim to her.3 stone down, 3 more to go0 -
When they microchipped Schrödinger’s cat, they had to do it twice so that when the quantum wave function collapses, both cats are microchipped0

My cats had to have a second microchip. Another cat was using the cat flap and was terrorising my two. So, I bought a Pet Porte cat flap - this is a cat flap that reads the chips, and only opens for registered cats. Unfortuntately, it does not recognise all types of microchips and the chip they had turned out to be one that could not be read. So, I had to have them chipped again, with ones that I knew would work.0

Presumably they're all registered in your name? Are they all with the same company?3 stone down, 3 more to go0 -
Nope, the first chips they had is with one company and the second is with a different one. They are all registered to me. Luckily I've not had to move house, but obviously when I move then I will update the details for both chips on both cats.0

I've spoken to the company the original microchip is registered with. I've sent a form in with my details. They will send a letter to the original (now deceased) owner. If she doesn't reply within 28 days - and it would be weird if she did - then they will change the details to mine.3 stone down, 3 more to go0
