Tips on potty training

With my first we waited until she was just 3. Books had said that as we were about to have a newborn, a potty training child may regress so waiting until she was a little older worked for us.

I completely admit I resorted to bribery, I stuck a picture of a toy she really really wanted on a star chart, and said once she had a certain number of stickers (stars for doing one thing smiley faces for the other!) then she could have the toy. I think we had maybe two accidents, but we were done with it in a week. She still had pull ups at night for a while just in case but not for long.

I felt bad for my friend who started at 18 months with her son as books said it was possible too, and she was still struggling with accidents and puddles more than a year later. She was really exhausted with it all but really should maybe have stopped and restarted another time.

It does feel quite a daunting thing, but you'll get there :)
  • It varies so much. Don't beat yourself up too much if it takes longer than you hope.
DS1 was nearly 4 when he was potty trained, and 5.5 when dry at night! This is unusual, he had issues with deep sleeping and not feeling the urge. But we persevered, lots of rewards, lots of praise, and never ever scolded him for any accidents.
DS2 was 2.5, and longed to be like his big brother. We bought him some cool big boy pants, and let him run around in just them whilst at home. He loved being in pants so much, he got it within a week.
DD1 was 20 months. I know this is pretty early, but she decided one day she didn't want nappies any more. It was a bit of a struggle finding knickers small enough for her, mind. She cracked it within a day, but she is an independent, wilful little thing. She hated using the potty, so having a kiddy toilet seat (the kind that pops on top of your regular seat) was a god-send.
Keep going. It can be hard work, but you will get there. My top tip is ALWAYS take a spare set of clothes when you go out (or three!).

Thank you, I needed a little lifting up. I think at 31 weeks pregnant I'm starting to wane in energy and I'm getting jaded.

I'm going to bite the bullet and take him out in the next couple of days and go from there. Tomorrow is a new day.
Newly Married, not a 2b anymore!! Mum to two wonderful boys!
