hi guys, I have a really soiled mattress that I need to replace and I wondered of anyone knew of any grants to help with the cost? I know the Community Care Grant used to excist but no longer does.
Many thanks to all who contribute on MSE

years ago you could get a new bed, those days are long gone
have you tried cleaning it then put a mattress protector on top to make it look better?0 -
I know! The community care grant would've helped, but it is sadly gone.. I've scrubbed and scrubbed and used bleach and anti bac spray but it is still there.. I had 3 mattress protectors but they were alll in the wash .. hence the problem 2 days running on both sides. Many thanks to all who contribute on MSE0

Are there any furniture charity projects nearby? You may be able to source one at low cost from there, either new or second hand. If not could you not cut down your spending elsewhere, sell a few things on eBay to pay for it?0

As a very short term solution could you use an airbed? Single ones that are just plain rubber on both sides (so easy to wipe down) start from a fiver from supermarkets.
This is a list of charities which give grants to individuals, there's a lot to plough through but maybe one could help?

Depending on what the stains are, if you know anybody with a decent steam cleaner, (not one of the handheld or floor mop type, a proper multi purpose one that looks like a cylinder vacuum cleaner) then it might be worth seeing if they will loan it to you to try out.
If nobody you know has one, then give Ace Fabric bleach a go, you can often get it in the pound shop & it's pretty good on a wide range of stains.
The other option for getting a mattress replacement is to keep an eye on websites such as Freegle, Gumtree, Freecycle etc. to see if anybody local to you has one to give away. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
Turn2us has a grants facility. Put in your post code and details. On the next page use the left hand menu to click on health related illnesses to find out what grants are available.

thanks so much for all your replies..I'm going into hospital for surgery in 2 weeks and the friend looking after my cats doesn't want to sleep on my mattress, and I don't blame him! I will look into that grant and also see about borrowing or renting a steam cleaner and if all else fails, I'll have to get a 2nd hand one.. I couldn't sleep on an airbed tho as I have bad arthritis in my spine. Many thanks to all who contribute on MSE0

Buy a plastic mattress protector (for incontinent). Maybe add a mattress comforter - an added supplement that can have any filling from polyester to feather.
If you are bold enough - maybe suggest that the friend chooses own up to ?>> amount0 -
I do have 4 incontinance sheets but they were all in the wash.. i spoke to my dr and I'm going to get them on prescription .. re my friend he is doing me a favor by staying and looking after my cats when i'm in hospital, so I don't thinkI can call any more favours

Whilst working as a volunteer at CAB, I've come across the name The Lighthouse Project, who apparently sell new or nearly new items, to those in need, at a very low price.
I don't know where you live, so it might be an idea to see if there is a branch in your area. Good luck!
