Money Moral Dilemma: Is the lead tenant pocketing some of my rent?

This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...
The other tenant and I think the lead tenant is pocketing some of our rent before paying the landlord what they’re actually owed, but we can’t prove it. What should we do?
So the "lead tenant" is skimming off a portion of your rent as an unearned profit before passing a smaller sum to the owner of the property?
I believe the technical term for this sort of parasite is "letting agent"0 -

To all those people who think that these questions are made up. I answered one a few months ago (Q - is it ethical to ask a charity for a higher salary) as it was a question really similar to a situation my daughter in Australia found herself in.
Having posted my reply I forwarded the link to my daughter a few days later saying "this was so similar to your situation I had to respond".
She came back saying "Duh Mum, it was me who posted the moral dilemma in the first place".0 -

Many Money Moral Maze questions end up on the Marriages forum, which is probably more appropriate since there aren't really 'right' or 'wrong' answers in that forum. In here there's normally a legally-right and legally-wrong response (although posters don't always agree on what they are!).
As such, a lot of clarification is often requested from the people who start threads... which can't happen here. So it's almost impossible to give useful replies.Mortgage when started: £330,995

Thanks for your comments. To clarify, the dilemma isn’t hypothetical but is a genuine situation.
Those who submit these dilemmas to us aren’t always forum members, or don’t provide additional information, so it’s not always possible for feedback or thanks from them.
However, it’s a valid point that the thread is not titled as a ‘Money Moral Dilemma’ which is something I’ll request we do in the future (for users who don’t click through to it from the weekly email where it is labelled as such).

I’ve started renting a room in a flat, it’s a great price, but I have to pay the rent to a longstanding lead tenant rather than the landlord direct.
The other tenant and I think the lead tenant is pocketing some of our rent before paying the landlord what they’re actually owed, but we can’t prove it. What should we do?
However if the lead tenant has an agreement to do this with the landlord then why not?0 -
Do you know who the landlord is? Are you sure the lead tennant isn't subletting a council or housing association property which is illegal and immoral and won't give you any security?0
