Does anyone sell their homegrown veg at the gate?
We grow veg for our own consumption and either freeze or give away any that we can not use.
My Dh is taking early retirement at xmas and next year we plan to grow a lot more. Money will be fairly tight and I was wondering if this is something we could do.
Do you need some sort of license? Cant believe you do as you see so many in our area selling a few toms or runners etc.
I would imagine we would only earn a few pounds a week, but as we all know every little helps!!

Hi Balmaiden
Cannot answer your question and am really sorry to invade your thread but can you please tell me how to post a new thread? I am obviously being thick but cannot see a button allowing me to do so.
Hope you get some good answers to your question
Best regards0 -
Sounds like a great idea to me! Wish you lived near me, I would buy your produce! No idea if you needed a license, wouldn't think so0

Hi balmaiden,
You should get more help with this on the Greenfingered board as there are quite a lot there who have allotments so I'll move your thread across there later.

Hi Katyk,
Sra has created a useful unofficial guide to MSE here. If you click on Thread (starting) there's a step by step guide on how to do it.

OK Pink,
but I have posted questions before on the greenfingered board but didnt get much of a response. I thought the dedicated old stylers may have given me more feedback.

That's fine, How about if I leave it here until it drops down the Old Style board and then move it over to see if you can get any more help there.

Hi Pink-Winged
Thanks for help - still not entirely sure how I managed it but new thread appears to have been posted.0 -
Not sure about a licence but if you phone the Trading Standards Department at your local council offices they will probably be able to help you. The other option is to see whether any small individual local trader shops near you would be prepared to buy your surplus. Obviously the likes of Sainsburys, etc. wouldn't be interested but a one-man band local shopkeeper might, especially if there isn't a greengrocer in the vicinity. I'm afraid that theft of vegetable or money is a possibility. To reduce the chance of this you could either stick up a notice on your gate saying Tomatoes, Beans, etc for sale. Please knock." Or put up a notice nearby saying "CCTV in Operation". Or slip a note through your neighbours' doors saying you have produce for sale. Our local neighbour sells eggs from her chickens and the neighbours are more than happy to buy her surplus. And they always pay her, whereas strangers might not.0
