tiptoeing around collegues

Do other companies put up with employees who constantly moans (quite openly) about how much they hate the place, the people in it and how much they wish it would burn down? This person is like a ticking time bomb and is very unapproachable that I feel I have to walk around on eggshells, a feeling I've had for the past two years.

Would it be unrealistic and inappropriate If I asked management if this person could have their own office or even work from home as they would be much happier with their own office environment than being in open plan.

Most people describe me as quiet and patient, but after two to three years of having a psycho colleague, its starting to get to me.

Have you complained to this person's manager that their attitude to work and their office environment is extremely negative, you find it unsettling and it may be affecting your work?

If the moaning is as persistent and open as you describe, shy have management not acted?

Its been well known for two-three years as they are hardly subtle about their feelings. I have brought it up in the past, but I used to grin and bear it. Now its effecting me more I am going to bring it up soon.

They just seem to think it will magically fix its self and this person will suddenly become happy, or maybe they think the sun shines out of their !!!, I don't know.

I just wish this person had their own office or worked from home. Win-win for both as they have their own office space/environment to sit in and gather dust. I can get on with feeling safe and comfortable to be able to breath or talk without them making comments under their breath, slamming drawers and huffing & puffing.

They've had meetings and are aware of the situation. They've switched desks, decoration, offered other internal positions (I think?).

It seems to be side stepped at the moment due to a busy moment. In the mean while the person constantly slates about how much they despise the company.

It is very difficult and annoying to have such a person around you and from what you have said, management acted on it but some people are always unhappy. Very little to do apart from accepting it. I did personally snap at someone before when they were doing the same, they sorted themselves out eventually but I wouldn't suggest you to do the same :P

Its not right if this persons negative attitude is bringing other people down. The management need to act. Bring it up again in your next meeting with your line manager and explain that its impacting on you. Is it a large organisation or a public sector job because it seems weird that management don't address the persons bad mouthing the company. Its kind of putting it into disrepute which is something most contracts state you can't do.

How does this person react if you ask them directly to stop moaning or tell them if they hate the place so much why don;'t they leave ?! Maybe they think they are being ironic and don't realise how draining it can be to others?

I think it would be unrealistic to think that they would agree to that just because a fellow colleague had an issue or didn't get on with someone. I would class that as the most extreme solution to the problem.

Has anything changed since you asked this question in May? Did you take any action then?

Absolutely nothing has changed. My grin and bear it approach is wearing thin and they get more and more of attitude.

The company has tried a few things to improve the environment, but other than constructing a brand new building, providing an office or allowing them to work from home I'm not sure what can be done.

They never complain about work on social media (or at least never name it). They only openly criticise it on the office floor or declare that everybody is a women's part.

The company is busy with another project, but It seems there approach to them is now suck it up or fudge off. Something they are trying to as they look and apply for jobs during working hours.

I just can't believe they can shout, swear, scream and have tantrums with no reprisal.

Sometimes I genuinely think that one day a US style shooting is going to occur unless there sectioned.

It is easy to say go to see management. But telling tales out of school never really helped anything and can cause you more problems than it resolves. Also it could affect your long-term relationship with the firm. Is this person worth that?

PS. If you really are just about to commit murder, I would perhaps see the manager. Better risking having to leave, rather than life in prison.
