My oven blew up - can it be fixed?

Hi!

I've got a Siemens oven, about four years old. I was grilling mackerel one morning, when there was something like an electric fire for about 10 seconds in the top element. I quickly switched the grill off.

The clock display went out. And since then, the oven has been dead.

The plug looks fine. I tried replacing the fuse, but that didn't help. I've also checked the fusebox in case the switch had flicked, but it hadn't.

If it had just been the top element that had blown, I wouldn't understand why the clock display had gone off, or the bottom element for that matter.

I did once have a fuse blow & and a plug begin to melt, when an oil-powered heater was left on overnight, plugged into the socket on the other side of the wall.

Bit of a difficult question, but any ideas what could have happened to the oven, and what part I'd need to replace to get it working again? It's not under warranty.

  • Looking back through the archive, sounds like it could be the same thing as this:

  • Model would help with answers? Check Fuses / RCD are on , check supply to oven ( does hob etc work). Some have thermal link/cut out / thermostat check that. Replacing element there around £10- £30 for most makes would most likely cure it if all previous are working

  • The plug fuse is fine - I changed it just in case. The hob still works fine. Plug sockets fine. So seems like the 'control panel' has short circuited. Can they be replaced?
  • Model would help with answers?if control panel had gone hob would not work change element

The hob is nothing to do with the oven though, they're seperate units/manufacturers/plugs.

I'll check the model when I get home. I think it must be control-panel, something electronic anyway, not just the element. Otherwise the clock would still be working, it just wouldn't heat from the top.

I had an oven before where one element was broken, it still functioned as normal except it only heated from one side! Perfect for that half-roasted, half-pink chicken!
