You would need to SORN the vehicle with DVLA. Otherwise you'll fall foul of continuous insurance rules and potentially be fined

What happens if your can bursts into flames or is stolen during this period?

  • It'd probably be a whole lot less hassle just to pay for the month you are away!

If the OP's concerned about that possibility (and he may well not be - I wouldn't care if my £500 old banger got nicked, certainly not enough to want to insure it just for that) he can get fire and theft only insurance, aka laid up insurance, which is considerably cheaper than "regular" car insurance. It doesn't count as insurance for the purposes of the Road Traffic Act because it doesn't cover anything to do with road accidents, so the car would still have to be kept in a non-public place and SORNed.

OP needs to SORN the car if it's without insurance. To be honest, for the sake of a month it's not worth the hassle - unless the insurance premiums are so high that a month's premium is significant.

You might if it was abandoned in the way somewhere, and you get a large bill for removing it. ;)
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Think it takes longer than a month for the MID warning letter about not being insured to go out. As long as you insure it as soon as you get the letter you'll be fine.
