Price for replacing a fireplace

Hi,

We would like to replace our fireplace as we don't like the style of it, but because it was on the house when we bought it and we've never bought one we don't know what's a normal price.

I went to the shop that installed the current one (> 10 year ago) and they said a new one would cost around £2000. Seems a bit too much?

We would something like this:
http://www.fireplaceworld.co.uk/package/9121/Adam-Southwold-Fireplace-Suite-in-Oak-with-Colorado-Electric-Fire-in-Brushed-Steel-43-Inch?gclid=CMniksS93cYCFYjLtAodwmQKSg#.VaaAImc6270

The only issue is that there's laminate around the base so this has to be exactly the same size as the current one.

Is it worth to visit other shops in the area to ask for other quotes?

Thanks

I can't answer your questions directly, but I got mine from http://www.thefireplacewarehouse.co.uk/.

All the fireplaces have dimensions listed, so you can at least see if you're likely to find one the size you want. Luckily my new one was bigger so the edge of the carpet is covered.

Mine has to be exactly the same size, as the laminate was cut to measure, and it's quite big already , I wish I could have a much smaller one but it's imposible because of the laminate :(
  • It would depend on the model bought for the whole cost really, but fitting-wise we paid £350 (don't know if that's good or bad) I would say definitely look on the net to see if you can get a bargain and then ring around to see if anyone can fit it :)

ETA: how desperate are you to keep the laminate? Also, could you get a smaller fireplace like you wanted and then replace the laminate around the gaps?

For a good craftsman you will need to pay about £500 for labour
Do you want your money back, and a bit more, search for 'money claim online' - They don't like it up 'em Captain Mainwaring
  • You can put piece of marble / painted plywood, timber, material same as new fire surround to match etc underneath the new fire to cover the missing areas laminate and 2k for electric fire is high?

We installed the laminate when we bought the house 4 years ago, so we are keeping it.. it did cost £2000!! Don't think replacing around the gaps would look very nice...

It's a gas fire, not electric.

Links to electric? but you can still put something under to cover missing laminate ? As its gas installation would be higher and markedly so if pipe work needs moving... Gas fitters tend to think one price thats "boiler replacement" anything else they'll do if bored or broke :rotfl:

    Hi Alisha

You can get something similar to that fireplace, a lot cheaper than that.

Go to a good reputable retailer in your vicinity and speak to them, take a picture of the style you want with you.
Also take the exact size of where the laminate ends with you. Any good fireplace retailer can have a bespoke hearth made, to these exact sizes, so you will have no issues with gaps etc. They will make, what is known as the riser to that size, so the hearth slots into place, the flat part of the hearth will overhang by about 1/2 '' at front and sides normally. It shouldn't cost you a lot to do this. If it is going on a chimney breast, also take the width of the breast, so you know what you pick will fit.

This is where us good fireplace retailers come into our own, we know what we are doing, not like the internet guys, who all they want to do is shift a standard box , with no hassle afterwards.

Don't fret, you should be able to get a nice surround, interior and fire well within that figure you quoted, maybe £500+ cheaper ( unless you live in London.)

If you want to find a list of good retailers, use Valor's website and find a local stockist. They are quite strong on having good retailers, they only have approx. 400 retailers nationwide listed, from over 2500 fireplace shops in the country. They are picky in who they promote.

    Hope this helps

Thanks rustyboy, I'll take a look.

Edit: Just checked and the place that quoted me £2000 is Valor.. so I guess that's the price :(

    Alisha

What part of the country are u from?

If you tell me, I have a lot of friends around the country, who could do something cheaper than that for you, I cannot see why the cost is so high.

I wont give retailers details out on here, but I will PM a few for you to go and visit, if I know anyone in your area.

    Cheers
