Possible Abestos

Just had the Building survey report from a post war 3 bed semi and the report mentioned the following:

Insulation!may!contain!asbestos!material!which!represents!a!health!hazard!and!can!be!
expensive!to!remove.!Instruct!a!specialist!contractor!to!check!the!material!and!if!
necessary!remove!it!in!accordance!with!statutory!regulations.

I was wondering whether I should get the seller to instruct someone to come and inspect the insulation to confirm that it isn't Abestos?

The house we are buying has textured ceiling and the survey said it may contain asbestos. We paid for the survey and it said it doesn't have any. The sellers were fine with us carrying out the survey but they were not willing to pay for it. We didn't expect them to pay for it anyway so it was fine in the end.

An asbestos survey isnt expensive. Its not that common for it to be contained within the insulation itself - are you buying a non traditional build property?
If you are concerned, then pay for a report. It is worth having as if there is asbestos up there you will need to advise any contractors who go up there and also ensure that if you are going up there yourselves that you arent disturbing it

That was just a mistake when I copied and pasted over to the thread.
  • We've just bought a house with several artex ceilings which prompted a similar thing on the homebuyers report. Specialist survey was around £300, incredibly thorough and found none in the ceilings but 1 insulating board in a fireplace we're having removed. Worth every penny for the peace of mind, after having a family member die from mesothelioma I'm incredibly wary of the stuff.
  • Our survey came back with the same notes in regards to an outbuilding, we are going to get tit checked out after completion

Lots of houses have asbestos in them. It's generally not a risk until you disturb it. So if you want to remove / replace a ceiling or floor or loft insulation that may contain asbestos you definitely want to get it checked out first.
This is not professional advice, find exactly what the item in question is and do some research :)
