Legally yes, you are not obliged to do anything- you are in the clear, the seller has no standing.

However, from a moral standpoint I think you should fix the car free of charge as you are a mechanic
    i do agree!!!

Just because someone is a mechanic it doesn't mean it's easy, quick or cheap to fix things on a car.

Judging by a couple of the responses here some people seem to assume it is.

Since most of the expense of fixing cars is labour, being a mechanic certainly does make a lot of repairs much cheaper. Especially since mechanics generally have their own sets of tools.

Spot on. As long as your name and address is on the v5c, then you're totally watertight.

    Private Sale = no warranty.

Its not uncommon for a 130,000 mile car to use some oil, and the other faults are wear and tear really. No car that age is going to be perfect.

Dont get involved at all - if you fix one thing, you'll end up doing loads for them.

If he wanted a perfect car with a warranty, there are plenty of new car franchises would be willing to help.

Totally agree with this - I have a zafira with the z16xe engine in - have had it since it had 40k on the clock and it has always used oil. I must pop in 500ml every couple of months. I thought this was bad until I read up and some of these engines use up to 1 litre ever 1500miles or so! it isn't vauxhall by any chance is it?

Unless he is self-employed then he would be losing earnings.

I didn't say he should repair it, let alone take time of work to do so - i'm saying being a mechanic will in fact mean lower repair bills as they can undertake work themselves.

Used to drive a zafira for work. Car covered about 1500 miles per week and used 2L per week
  • The cars not a Vauxhall.

I txt him back stating that I was not aware of any oil consumption faults and that it was a private sale sold as seen with no warrenty given or implied, and there was nothing more I can do. He then responded that he will seek legal advice. A lot of stress I could really do without at the minute

Tell him to find and point you in the direction of the relevant act that backs up his theory you should fix it.

Does he know about cars ?
