Being a fairly old student (I'm on my third degree having studied at three major UK universities - Leeds, UCL, Warwick) I can honestly say that I've seen, first hand, how universities have gone from giving a damn about all students to only caring about those with money.
I speak especially about Warwick as I have never experienced such an environment that tries to squeeze every penny out of the poor sods who study here. Not only is the union expensive (£2.40 for a crap pint of lager) but every weekend they close the union bar to have a paying event so you can't even access your own union bar. I see absolutely no point in being part of the NUS as there hasn't been even the slightest evidence of any activity to reduce the financial burden placed upon students here. Warwick also has a 'sensible drinking' policy that it uses to justify the artificially high alcohol prices here, however, not being a big drinker I can say that if there was an onus on stopping binge drinking and caring about student health I'd really like to know why the soft drinks are as expensive as the alcohol. What the NUS does at Warwick I really don't know and I really would like to know where all the money goes.0
