Confidence lost/making a huge financial decision

The title speaks volumes. To cut a long story short my nose is a complete mess. Seven years ago, when I was eighteen, I was caught in the crossfire of a fight at a pub. Someone threw a wine bottle, and it hit me in the face. The bottle didn't break, my nose did. The surgeons at hospital did all they could, but I'm left with a saddle nose deformity.

It affects my life in so many ways. I have no confidence left inside, and I always think people are staring at my nose. It has become unbearable over the past few months, to the point where I can't take it anymore. I have started proceedings for cosmetic surgery. It is going to cost £8950. I have £4000 in inheritance, and I have to convince my mother to be a guarantor on a loan for me. The loan is for £6000 at 39.9% APR which is not too bad. If she agrees, I will have the loan within 30 days and get my nose fixed ASAP.

  • Can I make a suggestion? Why not take a trip to the Philippines (where I live) and get the surgery done here. It'll cost maybe £2000 and be done by a proper surgeon ( I can give details if required). The air tickets for economy are about £800 return, but I always go premium economy at £1800. The rest of your inheritance you can put towards whatever you want when all the girls or boys (I don't know your gender) come knocking at your door.

Can I make a more realistic suggestion?

Why not ask the NHS to fund this? If it was an accident and outside of your control, part of the problem is that the surgeons at the time didn't achieve a good result and your nose new has a bearing on your ability to live a normal life, the remedial action may be funded as an exception.

Did you get criminal injury compensation, might be worth looking into it to see if you are eligible.

I think that the suggestions in the three replies above are all worth investigating.

Medical tourism is particularly suited for cosmetic surgery and may be a good solution to reduce your costs; you may not need to go as far as the Philippines, Belgium could be suitable for example.

    why £6 K at 39.9% ?

why not £4950 ? at the lowest APR you can possibly find, there are lots better deals out there ?

Also agree with checking out options mentioned above .

I agree with VfM4meplse, you have nothing to lose by going to see your GP to see if NHS surgery could be considered.

The guidelines are more strict now but if emotional wellbeing is severely affected, or there are secondary problems eg. do you have consequent breathing issues through your nose? it can be considered.

Definitely worth a discussion first with the doc.

You must go and see your GP either to investigate the NHS paying for the operation or help with your problem, you must explain fully to him/her how it is making you feel.

However you feel nothing is worth taking out a loan at what is basically loan shark rates, and on that point why can't you get a loan at much lower rates?

Do you have a low income, other debts?

I am afraid this is not a quick fix, you can't expect to have surgery and feel totally better the next day, you have to confront your feelings first.
If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.

I think that's a horrendous rate of interest!

Can you not get a lower rate or is it your credit rating that means you can't?

I would also look into the suggestions provided in earlier posts.

It's an awful rate of interest. In my head calculations suggest you will be paying £200/month in interest before thinking about the capital.

Forget the loan @ 39.9% interest, way beyond your means, and you will be back in (x) years time, saying I took out a loan and now it is at £10k or what ever, the interest rate is way over the top.
