Parking ticket from Bury Council/NSL

Please can you help me with a parking ticket.
Where I live there are houses on one side of the road and on the other is a bit of land with room enough for two vehicle, then after that is a free council car park. The bit of land is just behind the car park sign with its rules/regulations. Myself and my neighbours have been parking on this bit of land for at least 15 years with no issues.
Recently there was a large event where there were 25000 people, they were all parked locally and the traffic wardens were out in force. I'd gone out for something and on my return my road was full so I parked up on the bit of land behind the car park sign, directly opposite my house and was given a ticket for parking outside the marked bays. I wasn't even in the car park. The ticket was issued by Bury Counil and was for £50.
I've appealed and had a rejection letter from NSL. Do I have a leg to stand on or do I just pay the ticket? Thanks
