Can Banks cancel an Overdraft FEE?, if in a 'minus' balance? Santander ??

With a Santander current account (basic current account, not the 123 account)

If a series of daily fees (£6 per day of being in a negative payment with an unarranged overdraft) for the account being in a negative, which has added up to say 5 days

5 x £6 = £30 to pay of overdraft fees (on a day by day basis)

This is the first time this has happened.

Once again there is no overdraft facility, it has just gone into a minus balance for 5 days.

Then if you phone them up, would they be lenient to 'waiver' this fee, as this is the first time going into overdraft has happened ??

Have you ever done this with a bank, and phoned them up to cancel the overdraft on the basis that it was the first time you went in the - overdraft facility ?

Which bank of yours did you phone to ask for the fee to be canceled ? and did they ?

Phone them up and ask them to remove or reduce the fees (politely)

    Problem solved.

Santander are pretty good at this. The 'unofficial' policy is they can do it once a year. I always go into branch and ask sweetly and explain why it happened (it's only happened to me twice thank god). If it genuinely is a one off, then they are usually very good about removing it.
Also, £12 is the limit of free unauthorised overdraft on the 123 accounts, so next time, even if you can't avoid the overdraft altogether, if you can limit the problems?

    Thank you everyone.

For those of you who had the fee removed, when phoning them,

did you speak to the 'customer service' department on the phone? or they put you through to a further department?

or did you go to the branch and they did it there?

    Thank you

I didn't think there were any overdraft fees with a Santander basic account (because there is no overdraft facility, arranged or unarranged)

I got FD to cancel one the other day for my mother. They were very accommodating but said she had to be careful not to go overdrawn again. It was only because she'd spent money on the house and then the payment to there was stopped because her pension hadn't been paid in yet but it wasn't stopped at the FD end.

Did the OP mean Everyday Current Account or Basic??

You are correct the Basic account from Santander is fee free

And is currently the only bank to offer no charges for failed payments e.g. standing orders or DDs although by end of this year that should change
