Amazon account email address changed?!

I received an email from Amazon telling me that my email address had successfully been changed from xxxxxx@gmail.com to xxxxx@yopmail.com. At first I thought it was just standard phishing stuff but I checked on the Amazon website (through browser, not through clicking the link) and my email address has indeed been changed.

I was obviously concerned so I checked my account but no orders have been placed or anything. I'm keeping a very VERY close eye on my bank accounts in the next couple of weeks.

I spoke to someone on live chat who said that the accounts team would have to look into it but they can't be phoned or spoken to via live chat so they'd email me!

I pointed out that my email address has been changed so it would be no use for them to email me at the address registered to the account seeing as it won't reach me, which seemed to totally stump the guy on the other end of the chat...surely they've dealt with this problem before?!

I'm not really all that sure what to do now! Has anyone ever had this happen to them before? What did you do?

As you are still able to log into your Amazon account, can't you change the registered e-mail address back to what it was originally then change your password to stop anyone else accessing the account?

You should also do a good malware search on whatever computersyou use to access Amazon just in case there is a password logger or something similar on it.

That same thought literally just struck me. I'm an idiot.

I've changed the email address back and the password too. I've actually just run a scan on both my phone and my laptop using malwarebytes/avg and found nothing! So weird

Thanks for pointing out the obvious...I feel so stupid now!

    Worrying though.

I would still want some answers from Amazon.
  • I have got no idea how it happened. I'm still waiting for a response from Amazon, who said they'd get back to me within 48 hours. Will update once I hear more!

Change both your email and Amazon passwords to new previously unused passwords.

It may be the person who gained access to your Amazon account has control over your email account.

So weird!! But how can you persist in keeping a close eye on the changed account(=doing nothing) rather than change password & email address immediately. U r as cool as cucumber.

Is this another series of odd remarks from someone getting their post count up ?

Yep - and then start spamming.

I've reported both, whether MSE do anything is another matter.
