All-in-One Printers - Which brand is cheapest to run?

Options
I’ve been on Amazon for hours looking for a replacement for my all-in-one printer but I am finding the task for choosing its replacement quite daunting. It is dastardly difficult to obtain information on running costs and detailed specifications. Inevitably, one needs to refer to each individual model on the manufacturer websites.

I would be grateful for any thoughts/information/links on the running costs of the current crop of all-in-one printers. Perhaps someone out there might know of published tables on comparative running costs. Maybe Which? has done some research? I am looking at the £75-£100 price range.

If anyone feels able to recommend a model whose spec’s includes OCR to Word Documents I would be very glad indeed!

    For what volume of printing?
    1 page a day/week/month?
    1000 pages a day?

And what kind of printing? Photos? Text, Letters? Line Drawings?

    Also why all in one?

I've just been through a similar exercise, got an Epson XP-225, 4 separate ink carts, full set of compatibles from Hornsea Inkjet Supplies for about £3.50 (yes, all four for £3.50, NOT £3.50 each). Been getting compatibles from there for ages, very good value :)

I chose the same printer (XP-225). My old printer had developed a habit of skewing photo prints at the bottom and was getting annoying. I saw an XP-225 in the local Tesco at ~ £40 did a quick check on my phone that compatible cartridges were available and that the price was competitive and bunged one in the trolley.

My ink was even cheaper at £5,85 for 12 carts from an eBay seller I'd used before. A quick check shows some that are cheaper still. I've gone through the original carts and the compatibles work fine although the printer driver does pop up a warning that they are not originals it still works OK so it seems Epson have dropped their earlier tactic of refusing to work with compatibles.

I had originally planned to buy a Canon wireless AIO as I know they run well on cheap compatibles but the base price was considerably higher at just shy of £100

Low volume printing: a daily memo which probably equals a full page of text each week. Very occasional photo.

I have always had an All-in-One. I print in low volumes, I more often need to scan printed material, sometimes saved as a jpeg, or to OCR for editing.

  • Ah yes, I picked up a leaflet yesterday on the HP ink scheme yesterday. I have to look into this!

Well the ebay shop is http://stores.ebay.co.uk/inkpower/

Here is one of their listings for 12 XP-225 cartridges which are now £4.89
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12-Ink-Cartridge-Epson-XP102-XP202-XP212-XP215-XP205-XP225-XP30-XP302-XP305-/151583669297

They come in a flat letterbox-friendly pack.

There are others even cheaper but as always check feedback and caveat emptor. If anything doesn't work I've found that eBay are excellent these days for forcing refunds.

I'd suggest a Samsung mono laser printer with a scanner built in. Nothing in your post suggests that you really need a colour inkjet.
