Chdsk checking in windows 8.

Options
Hi,

I have three hard drives on my computer divided into various partitions.

I have windows 8 on one (as well as windows 7 on other partitions) and if I have to do a hard restart then windows goes through the whole rigmarole of running chdsk on every one of my drives, a real nightmare. If I press key to skip then it does but will run chdsk again at startup.

Surely there must be some way to disable chdsk in windows 8 that it wont do this, never have a problem with windows &.

I know that chdsk is a good thing to run but only when you want to.

Any advice as how to disable this on windows 8 appreciated.
Thanks a lot.

You should fix the underlaying problem and let chkdsk do its job when required.

if you are having to do " and if I have to do a hard restart " then there is a problem with a program , or even a stick of memory ,,, or the drive , fix the cause , don,t use a plaster
  • Get Glary Utilities and run its scans, one of which picks up any hd errors and fixes them.

Why are you doing hard restarts ? When you do a hard restart you can get problems with delayed writes to disk that cause orphaned areas on the HDD which windows needs to address when it reboots after the hard reset. You may have a problematic hardware driver but you haven't said why you are doing hard resets and if you need to hard reset W8, W7 or both.

    More info needed to help.

Not always, i've had it twice delete all the data from an external HDD, leaving all the files with 0 bytes file size.

It's checking the disc because of a "dirty bit", until this is cleared it will keep running at every startup.

The problem really is the way you hard reset the PC, never do it during disk activity and always try other course of action first:

Use the "windows key" to bring the desktop back to focus.
Alt+Tab out of any full screen applications.
CTRL+DEL to bring up task manager and close the offending program.

If your getting actual hard crashes, where the screen goes blank or shows graphics artefacts, then you've got a driver or hardware issue you need to fix.

Nothing wrong with computer, it seems this is a feature of windows 8, it doesn't happen too often that I have to do a hard restart, but a pain in the a** if I have to or for some reason windows 8 sees fit to do the chdsk.

WIndows 7 is great in this regards, it just shows a screen with lots of options one being to start normally, so no chdsk.
