Tesco Bank - Linked Accounts

Hi folks,
I have a Tesco Bank savings account which I use for DDs (DDs going into it).
I wanted to set-up a new DD last week, but I was prevented from adding a new linked bank account online - I got some sort of error message.
Today, I got a letter though the post saying that I needed to send a bank statement of the account that I want to add.
Has this happened to anyone else before? Whats the purpose of this?
Thanks.
