Cheapest way of getting to Cornwall

Me and a friend are going to Newquay in September. We have a chalet booked, it was through the Sun and only cost about £20 each. The trouble is, the people who were meant to be coming, who were driving, now can't come.

So we have to get there on public transport. I've had a quick look and the fares are really pricey, even with a young persons railcard and booking in advance.

My friend seems to think we can go with a coach company running coach holidays but just use the transport. Is this possible?

Getting there is going to cost more than the holiday at this rate. It would be cheaper to go to Spain, ridiculous!

Anyone know any ways of getting there as cheap as possible?

Well, it rather depends on your starting point!

From London, check out the fgw web site and be sure to search for single tickets in each direction. Check near the beginning and end of each day.

Also look for tickets to/from places near the start and end points of your journey (you can always buy another ticket for the last little bit), and check the hints on cheap train travel here.

And remember that Ryanair fly to Newquay.

Oops forgot to say, we are in Wolverhampton.

    What is FGW?

I will have a look at the hints, cheers.

FGW is a train company. It runs between London and the West Country.

Anyway, start with the VirginTrains website. Look for tickets from Wolverhampton and/or New Street, to Bristol and Exeter as well as to Newquay. If you find any good deals, then look on fgw for tickets on to Newquay. Don't forget to leave time between the arrival of your first train and the departure of your second one, just in case the first train is late.

First great western , they are the train operator for cornwall , and calling then that is VERY generous...
  • I looked up funfares on national express, and although they had some, they were only to and from London.

A return would be £11 with them, but the journey takes 7 hours, and we would need to get to London, so that is too much hassle and travelling.

I will have a go looking up trains and splitting up the journey.

Can't you replace your driver with someone else:confused:

Try Megabus, though you'd probably need to leave from Birmingham & change in Bristol or Plymouth.:o

Are you a couple of Babes?

If so you could hitchhike.:rotfl: :rotfl: Moneysaving or what!!:D
You're Damned If You Do & You're Damned If You Don't
  • You mean you went to Cornwall on the coach?

Going from London is not an option for us. It's a good 2 1/2 hour train journey to London, plus then we would need to get the tube to Victoria to get the coach. So more than 10 hours of travelling.

Closest Megabus goes is to Southampton.

I don't think hitchhiking would be a very good idea! I'd rather pay!
