Hope that someone can help.
This morning when I started my laptop (an Acer) Windows (8.1) was doing an update - including installing more tiles (LoveFilm, Spotify) but now:
(1) My wallpaper photo has disappeared and instead of being green, the background is now black - with the usual desktop icons
(2) All my tiles have disappeared
(3) I can't get a list of programmes available by going to the START button (all I get is taken to a blank blue page).
(4) When I opened my browser - Firefox - I had to set it as my default again (have done that).
Anyone-else had this problem? Any idea what I can do ???

In case anyone-else has a similar problem ...
This turned out to be due to corrupted files (no idea how this happened - which is a bit concerning). Needed to run DSIM.exe (following instructions on microsoft Windows 8 forum page - for Unified Telemetry Client files) and then was able to create a system restore point.
SEEMS okay now. Fingers crossed ...0
