in Techie Stuff
Good morning all
I am not well up on techie stuff so forgive me asking what to you will be a very basic question.
I'm going to have to upgrade computer which will have Windows 8.1 on it. Some seem to come with MS Office installed which if I understand correctly I will have to pay for annual subscription after a year. I do not want to do this. Currently I have MS works which came pre-loaded.
Looking on Amazon I can buy Works v 8 or 9. Will this work with MS Windows 8.1?
Many thanks in advance

According to Microsoft there should be no problem with Works 9 http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/compatibility/CompatCenter/ProductDetailsViewer?Name=Microsoft%20Works%20SE&vendor=Microsoft&ModelOrVersion=9&Type=Software&tempOsid=Windows+8.1
I would also consider Apache open office, its free and compatible with word/works.0 -

Works was discontinued a long time ago. While it would work in 8, it may be it won;t work in Win 10, and as its quite old may not be able to read newer office format documents.
As Stevie says try Open office - https://www.openoffice.org/ Its a free office suite that can read and write most office formats.0 -
thank you both for your replies. I like the idea of "free"!!! so when the dreaded day of upgrade comes I'll try that0

Office 365 is the subscription version: but you can still buy MS Office in various versions, none of which require a subscription, and all versions currently on sale are compatible with 8.1, as is Office 2010.
But Libre Office will do the job (not Open Office, which is not being funded and so not being updated anymore) for free. Just change the defaults to save as xlsx or docx as required.
Works is long obsolete, it is not compatible with MS Office file formats nor any others, so useless for exchanging files except with another user.No free lunch, and no free laptop0
