Cats staying out in hot weather?

Does anyone else's cat stay outdoors all the time in this hot weather? Mine refuses to come in, preferring to sleep night and day in garden. She only eats about half of her usual amount. I used to be worried sick that she was unwell, but now I'm just curious if all cats do this.

Is it because they are less active in the heat or sick of being indoors when it's cold ?
What's your experience?:)
BTW She's been checked over by the vet and given the all clear.

Loads of cats do that. Just keep fresh cold water available and they'll be fine. Not that they'll drink your water they'll find some manky source of water and drink that instead...but at least you've tried.

  • Iwasx watering the plants and had my bottle of Evian with so I put that some of that in her basin, which got a flick of her tail as she prefers nasty limescaly tap water, you're right I tried to refine her to no avail. She's pretty but a scruffy feral at heart. I miss her terribly when she refuses to come indoors I miss watching TV with her on my lap, I miss her snoring on my chest when I go to bed, but I guess there's lots of wild life outside in the summer to keep her hunting skills honed.

Cold comfort, but if she was inside she probably wouldn't be on you in hot weather anyway. Ours is a real lap cat - he loves his humans, but he hasn't been on our laps in the worst of the heat. He's taken to laying on the top of the sofa backrest, between us, with one paw on one of our shoulders. :)

Its too hot for her to be indoors, my cats always went off their food and stayed out when it was hot. There is too much fun going on outside too, all those moths to catch!

I bet she is happy to come in now its raining!! :)

Mine goes under the coffee table, which is near the patio door, so he can keep half an eye on 'his' garden...........
or under a couple of bushes outside, I have put some water bowls out for him.

Now I agree moths are fun!. the sound of him crunching on them, yuk!

Years ago, when crane flies were much more common (I wonder why we don't see them anymore?) we used to be able to hold the cat up to the ceiling and she would daintily pick them off the ceiling with her little paw and pop them in her mouth, pushing the legs in and eat them up!!! She would eat anything!

I see my two for breakfast and tea - otherwise they are very good at finding shade under a bush.

Leave a bowl of water outside - although mine prefer puddle water when available

As others have said cats will find the coolest place in this hot weather and eat less, mine are even hunting less as well. Once a day though I call them in just to check they are OK and give them a little snack reward for coming when I call.

It's probably the chlorine smell. The water company puts a few droplets in every thousand litres. I put the water into the fridge overnight before putting it in the bowl. Chlorine does evaporate over time so it shouldn't be in the water any more after that period.

My water company has some things to say about the taste of it's water.
