Sainsburys don't need the box for faulty refunds. I had two items which went faulty within the year of buying them - a kettle and a digital radio. They just need the receipt.

Asda, does it really need the box? The product model number is on a panel like under the base (kettle) or back of it (tv)

Asda's policy (and AFAIK the SOGA) does NOT require the return of the box, you probably got someone who has been poorly trained (and the training there can be very poor).

At least you got it sorted, the store will also likely have had an internal mail to the boss about this too.

I had a kettle from Sainsburys for 10 months which stopped working.
As I had mislaid the receipt I rang the store.

They said as it was their brand they did not require the receipt and exchanged it.

You will find a lot of the times the store managers/customer services are told to tell a customer to do this and that, but as soon as you write to them they immediately go against what they are telling staff to do. Surprised at this though, I know the ASDA up my way give customers what they want, in fact i'm surprised at what the customers get away with to be honest.

I returned a faulty ceramic pan to the Asda in Boston, Lincs. today. It was bought 8 weeks ago but had already lost its non-stick quality. As I was returning faulty goods with the original receipt, I requested a refund from the Customer Services desk but was told that after 28 days I have to go to the manufacturer for a refund. I pointed out that this was not true according to SoG Act, etc. but she was adamant that her stance was "Asda Policy". I asked to see a manager, but was amazed when he also refused a refund and confirmed what the assistant said. I then telephoned Trading Standards Consumer Advice while I was in the store and put the conversation on speakerphone for all to hear. As soon as the manager heard that Asda may be committing a criminal offence by refusing to offer repair, replacement or refund, he changed his tune and then began denying that he had declined my request. I got my refund, but it took me over 20 minutes to have a problem resolved that could have taken less than 5.
