Name on credit card

in Credit cards
I'm called Daniel, but use the name Danny in almost all cases.
I've had several credit cards/bank accounts that use the name Danny over the years.
Today, I phoned up Halifax, as I wanted to concert an existing cards to the Clarity one. Existing card is in my name "Danny" but I mentioned my name on passport is Daniel. They're now insisting I go into branch to change the name, before completing any new applications?
Is this really needed? I've always been identified from credit reference agencies with my name with Danny, and have a card with another bank open since 2000..

I have 10 current CCs and not one of them matches the name on my passport. Your passport details are of no concern to the CC companies. They are being stupid jobsworths.0

That is precisely what I thought..
Started bleeting on about FCA rules and contracts etc etc.
I might just apply online and close other account after.0 -
All applications for bank/credit card accounts have to match the details you provide for ID/address purposes.
Makes sense really as they are two different names so could be two different people applying.0 -

I have the same problem I'm trying to solve. My name on the electoral roll is (MIDDLE NAME) (FIRST NAME) (LAST NAME) but on my passport its (FIRST NAME) (MIDDLE NAME) (LAST NAME). Wanted to apply for the Halifax Clarity but got rejected due to this..
Let me know how it works out.0 -
I used to use just the last part of my double-barrelled surname for banking purposes. That all changed a few years ago. Whenever I've had to provide ID I've had to use the name exactly as shown on the ID. I agree with Meer53 that it makes sense these days.0

I applied online, using Daniel, and it went right though.
I don't actually recall needing to provide ID on a credit card application before.. You just apply online, and get accepted or rejected. If accepted, card arrives a few days later. No need to provide Id..
Might be different for a mortgage application but not for credit card/bank account, in my experience.0 -

If you'd applied for a card with a new issuer you would have been asked for ID and possibly address verification. It went straight through because you used your name, not a shortened version.0 -

Never happened to me yet, and I've applied for many credit cards with different, new providers. On my last application Nationwide did threaten it, but never went ahead with it and gave me the card regardless.
Here's the thing; the CRAs hold alias names against you, which in the case of the OP must surely have included 'Danny ....'. The CC providers use the CRAs for identity checking, so they must have had a match. Why then, are they making things difficult for the OP? Jobsworths I reckon.
I do sympathise with people, like me, who have to use their second Christian name. It caused me difficulty when I last applied for a mortgage, 20 years ago now. However, that again was down to a jobsworth attitude on the part of the company (Halifax, as it happened).0 -
I used "Daniel", and previous Halifax account was "Danny" so not quite true
Your application would have been assessed using electronic checks, not your previous account details. Electoral roll etc.
Id criteria has tightened up significantly in the last couple of years, all information has to match official documents now, passport, DL, electoral roll etc.0
