2007 corsa vs V reg passat

I've currently got a 57 reg 1.2 corsa which has done 103k miles, and I've just paid off 5 years worth of finance on it. Now, my mother in law is looking to get rid of her v reg 1.6 vw Passat and has offered it to me for nothing, having done 130k. It's got 11 months mot and has just had a new timing belt, but it's already 16 years old.

Both have full service history but my corsa, as my first car, has taken a bit of a hammering and will need at least £500 worth of work at its next mot. Meanwhile the vw Passat has had 2 owners and has been very well looked after.

I've done 80k of the corsa's mileage and do a lot of driving up and down the motorway for work, plus at least one long distance drive a month.

I could get about £1000 for my old corsa but is it worth the risk for an older car? I'm tempted cos a) it's free, b) it's more powerful and c) I understand (though may be wrong) that the vw will cope better with greater mileage. However, insurance would be would be about £200/year more than I'm paying at the moment (though would this be offset by savings in repairs/maintenance costs? Will the passat outlive the corsa?

More powerful, but it weighs a LOT more also so power to weight will
    probably be less.

Why does your car need £500 worth of work for the MOT? Proper servicing should have kept any unexpected bills to a minimum.

£200 a year more to insure, fuel consumption is likely to be worse also, More expensive to tax?

The 1.6 is a but underpowered for a car that size also.
