But, how annoying does it have to get? Surely, when the alarm goes off, one normally puts petrol in. It doesn't continue to sound until it gets some.

Well that's a matter of opinion. Op doesn't like the sound, I personally wouldn't like the sound, just because you wouldn't care if it was there doesn't make everybody else wrong0 -
I don't like all them warning lights so I'm thinking of taking all the bulbs out0
