room thermostats
We have been advised to get room thermostats for our central heating, as after that we can qualify for an interest free loan to get a new boiler. can anyone recommend one? Also how exactly do they work - do they replace the existing central heating programmer? can anyone point me to somewhere that explains their installation and use properly?

Room thermostats only do one thing - they show the temperature where they are placed.
They can be wired in to your heating programmer so that they send a signal to the programmer to fire up the heating when the temperature falls below a set level, or turn it off when the sensed temperature is above the desired level.
It would not be easy to have one in each room controlling the boiler, but these days it could be done with modern electronics and wireless controls.
Radiator thermostats are a bit different in that they control the amount of hot water/heat going through a radiator and therefore how hot or cold the radiator is.0 -

replaced an old analogue stat, this is great it tells you the current temp and you turn it to the target temp. Nice and easy to fit...well it was in my case as I was replacing one.0 -
If you intend to get a new boiler soon then it will probably come with a suitable one, therefore just get a basic £10 one for now and fit it in the middle of the house (in the downstairs hall)0

It is generally worth fitting thermostatic rad valves anyway, turn them down/off in rooms you are not using to save energy.0
