Don't know what to do. My lovely dog was put to sleep this morning, she hadn't been right for a while backwards and forwards to vets plus my Dads not been well had doctors and nurses out over the last month. Because of all this I've forgotten to pay my token payments for last month. I'll do them this week but am concerned that creditors will think I don't want to pay.

So sorry to hear about your dog :( We had ours put to sleep a month ago and it's just heartbreaking. Also sorry to hear that your dad hasn't been too good. Really hope things improve soon. As for your creditors, I would do what you're going to do and make the payments as soon as you can. Massive hugs to you x

That's very sad, big hugs :(, even more tough (if it could be) if you have other family worries too.

Don't add to your distress by worrying about the tokens, just write to them and say you have had some family illness and apologise for delay in paying, here is your token for Sept etc etc.

As I've said before on here I didn't pay any tokens, just because I was so stressed about the whole debt thing I couldn't. You might get a couple of calls, if you do, use the same line, due to family illness there was a delay, you are sorry but you have sent the payment for Sept, etc etc. hope you're dad is a little better now?

    Hello All,

Just thought I'd post an update on this one. I went back to them and politely told them I wasn't in a position to re-review my offer as it wouldn't be fair on the other creditors. They completely ignored this; no response at all. I nudged them a few times as I wanted an answer and I also wanted them to confirm their bank details. Eventually they wrote to me confirming the bank details and nothing else. My feeling is they were just trying their luck, I guess it will be now be deferred to a DCA. In the meantime I have made the first payment of the DMP to them. I would have preferred to have a formal acceptance of some kind but this seems unlikely. It is a very small fraction of my DMP so I feel reasonably comfortable paying them, seems safer than ignoring them.

Sounds like you did exactly the right thing. Don't worry about the formal acceptance, they'll take the money.

Family comes first - that's your Dad, and yes, family includes your much loved pet.
Don't stress over the missed token payments - just make them when you can.
Take care, stay as strong and positive as you can.

Just an update on the F&F letters that went out, 2x creditors have agreed to accept our offers of 40% of the total remaining balance of each debt, reducing the total debt by £1500 and cutting 2x months of the remaining term of the DMP.
One creditor has so far refused to budge, so the DMP will continue as usual, but they will get more each month from next month anyway.
still waiting for replies from 5x creditors

I copied your signature here - as it can be easy to overlook this especially for those that just ready the daily email - this is sensational debt busting. I guess some of the creditors realise they'll get all their money if they just hold out til next year, 10 more payments?

In awe (and also a tad jealous but in a good way).

  • Thanks all for your kind and supportive words. Patch hugs to you it is so heartbreaking. Life sucks at the moment. I'm under the mental health nurse at my GP surgery cos I had a bit of a breakdown last week. Luckily my brother was visiting so wasn't on my own with Dad to look after. I will make the payments this week and explain why they are late. The other thing is I need to pay for my girls cremation and costs for the vets. Its going to be so expensive because I saw them on Sunday. I'm due to start DMP on 1st November but am considering contacting stepchange and creditors asking if I can start it on 1st December. I hope that it'll be acceptable.

    Thanks once again everyone.

Awww thanks, its been a long slog, but we played the game. in the beginning we realized that we were living like church mice, bt after year 2 we started to ease up a bit, didnt declare every last penny, and started to put a little aside to make life a little more "normal" for the children (taking ice-cream to the beach instead of buying it there & earing it from the tub was a challenge, but we managed & no one noticed :rotfl:)

In all honesty, we could probably have been debt free by Christmas letting the DMP run its natural course and continuing to live as church mice, but, with one creditor not stopping the interest and putting our DFD out by almost 13 months we were in it for the long haul, so just adjusted things in our favor a little.

We have changed our spending habits, Shopping bills came down to £50 a week from almost £175 by swapping to Aldi & mincing our own meat for burgers etc, plus some savvy energy tariff swapping and haggling sky packages / home internet, growing our own potatoes, tomatoes, runner beans, spring onions, even going as far as to trade vegetables with other neighbors for carrots / beetroots etc.
Mr.Spicy took the company car option as his other car was costing a fortune to keep running, so we have had a new car that is really economical, meaning we have been able to spend the weekends camping and at the beach when he isnt working.

Im just watching for the post now to see if we have any more creditor letters .....

a Qn. though to the Long haulers ... has anyone had any experience of Cabot ?

Just a quick update - got a brief email from Stepchange last wednesday just saying they had received my application and I have heard nothing since so I am going to call them tomorrow as its nearly 2 weeks since I applied.

I am trying to get some funds together to use Puzzcat's letter and start sending out token payments. A few of my debts aren't due until the end of the month - is it better to default before I start my DMP?

I think I will tell Stepchange to start my DMP on 1st December giving me a month to get a few hundred together for an emergency fund. Alas no luck so far getting a weekend/ part time job yet - still looking though.

Hi Maddie, sounds like a good plan for a delayed DMP start. Sorry the job hunting Has not found success yet, not sure what sort of thing you are after but in my local (very small town) a lot of the shops are hiring part time for Xmas, so don't give up. Equally don't take on too much, breakdowns are not unheard of in DMP land, go steady rather than race at it.
