Ninth Anniversary 1,000 Posts Combo Breaker Post of the Month
So next Sat 1st October I will make my final DMP payment to Step Change, exactly 8 years to the day after I made my first one, and I just wanted to say thanks to all on this forum that have helped along the way, I don't post often, but visit regularly and have gained help and advice just by reading.

When I made my first payment all those years ago my debt free date was March 2020, it hasnt been easy but with hard work and a bit of luck along the way this has gradually come down, and from Nov I will be approx £600 a month better off and debt free in time for Christmas!

I just wanted to say thank to everyone here and at Step Change for keeping me going through the tough times (the first few years, the court cases, CCJ's etc) but it has all been worth it, and starting the DMP was the best thing I ever did, and for those still struggling, keep it up!

Now time to start living my life again, debt free and secure in the knowledge I'll never go down that road again .

    Thanks again

Many many congratulations, so happy for you :j:j:j. Sounds like it was very hard at the start, we don't often get Ccj talked about on here these days. Thanks for sharing your story,

    Hi tranceaddict,

What an amazing feeling it must be to know you have one payment left - and to knock 4 years off your DFD is an amazing achievement :T

Thank you so much for taking the time to come back and share your journey - it means a lot for those of us who still have a long way to go, knowing that we will get there eventually :)

Enjoy the extra monthly income and maybe treat yourself to a little something special at Christmas to celebrate your fantastic achievement

    Take care,

Well done! 8 years is a long time, mine took 5, but it's great to be debt free at long last.

Keep going everyone - your debt free date will arrive eventually. This thread is so inspirational and really helped me too. It's nice to think that even in these times where bad news is all around, that there's still people out there, nice people, willing to help and encourage others on their debt free journey, and not asking for anything in return!

Debt free date 25/11/2015 - Made It!
  • Hi everyone,

I've just posted all my relevant documentation to SC to start my journey on the DMP.

I have 31K of unsecured debt and my income is now less than my monthly expenditure and I don't even have enough to to "live" .

It's the best option for me without a doubt I've had countless sleepless nights, lost a lot of weight and it has had an effect on my health.

I never knew it existed until I came on here and so one mentioned I call step change. So thank you.

What I do want to know what would you consider reasonable living costs?

I have forgotten a few things on my original consultation and they are ruining me tomorrow to discuss.

I also need to cancel all direct debits and call my creditors to make a token payment?! How much should I pay? Also how will that work with my over draft?

It's a lot of work to do this week, I have to re set up all household direct debits also.

I am incredibly anxious and worried I have never ever missed a payment but how long can I go on making payments but not looking after myself?!?

I'm worried I'll leave myself not enough money on the budget so any help there would be appreciated.
  • Oh I forgot to add, how do I make a token payment over the phone?!? If I give them my card details for my new basic account doesn't that mean they could then start taking money from me???

Wouldn't bother messing around with token payments if I were you, There a waste of time really.
Just write to each creditor telling them your starting a DMP, give them the date and amount they will be paid, and leave it at that.

And there's no need to be worried either, many people have been in your position, nothing bad will happen, debt collection is a very long process, nothing to worry about at all.

  • Hi there.

    My DMP is through SC.

IF I MAKE A TOKEN PAYMENT EVEN £1 per creditor how do I make that payment.

I just feel the need to for peace of mind

We have just set our plan with step change, first payment to go out in November.
I made a token payment of £1 each on step changes advice.
I did them by online banking, using their account numbers.

I made token payments for 3 months before I started my dmp with sc. I just sent a £1 cheque to each creditor, or you could send postal orders but they cost more or do it online if those facilities are still available as most closed my online accounts pretty sharpish!!
