  • Sooo after being a longtime lurker, and making use/taking comfort in many posts here I decided to post myself!
here is my basic Journey info Original Debt Total around £19222 LBM around May 2014 Debts incurred sy stupidly taking out more loans/Credit Cards when Extra work I did didn't happen as planned and I ceased to be able to meet the already sizable Loan, Credit Card and Overdraft costs and meet day to day living costs.including the dreaded short term loans...I was head in sand about paying it a back...
Originaly looked in to DMP with a firm I would have had to pay to use then reading here saved me from that!..I swapped all over to Stepchange before DMP started, did as told.made token £1 payments swapped banks and awaited the start of DMP, for a long while I couldn't bear to tell my OH how stupid I had been but after a year on my DMP I came clean and he was very good about it. so I'd advise anyone in that position to fess up..much better than the stress of hiding it and trying to fob off where all your money is going!
MY current DFD is 2/2/17 and my debts stand at £7,281.31 (as of Dec..Jan payment not gone yet!)
I can'r thank everyone here enough although I didnt post I absorbed all the advice and you heped me feel more "normal" and less of a faillure!
Now llooking forward to reaching NEXT Christmas when DFD wi be within touching distance but am proud of the £11,940.00 paid to date and deffo know I could not have done it without this forum here!
Onwards and downwards with the debts, onwards and upwards with our self esteem and a happy healthy New Year wished to all of you!
  • I like that idea, BDFSH, thanks for posting it:T.

I'm not sure I could stick to it on a regular basis, I'm involved in lots of little mini-challenges at the moment (not just on MSE) and spare money is very hard to come by. I don't want to commit to something I know I won't achieve, I feel enough of a failure with money as it is:o.

The reason I like your version is because it deals in small amounts:T. The other version that seems popular (with those who have lots of spare money;)) is based on saving £1s and it's weekly rather than daily. £1 in week 1, £2 in week 2 and so on.The drawback with that is that in weeks 49,50,51 and 52 you are having to save a total of £202:eek:. As this will be in December it's definitely a non-starter for most I'd imagine. Probably OK to take the weeks out of sequence but whenever it is, a week that needs savings of £52 is totally impossible for me:o

Yes - that's why I liked this one better too!! May still struggle having to find £10-£20 per week in the later months of the year but going to keep going as long as I can!! Already got 3p saved!! Another 3p going in tomorrow!! Anything is better than nothing :) If I can keep going until the Autumn I'll be happy!

Good luck if you decide to go for it!!

My version is much more random, but I check my change at the end of the day and save all coins of the same year, so Jan and Feb don't tend to save many, but saved £25 in 2015 which went towards Christmas meals out. :D.

But it definitely all helps, and getting in a routine of saving no matter how small is a great thing.
Debt -it's a fight that I'm winning, dealing with debt one day at a time.

Great idea Sazzie! May try that one in conjunction with the penny challenge when the daily amount is too much to save. That way I will still be saving some but maybe not the full amount of the penny challenge.

6p saved now - onwards and upwards!! :D

In preparation for moving to self managed DMP I have applied to open another basic bank account. I want to have an account just for the DMP payments. We have 12 creditors to pay (it was down to 11 but EDF split the debt and kept electric debt but sold gas debt - go figure!)

I've applied to HSBC - not sure will get an account but we don't have any debts associated with this bank so thought it was my best option. The other option is a Co-op account but you have to phone for an application pack and I couldn't be bothered with that at the moment. May have to though if HSBC say no :(

I've started the NEDCAB process as well.

We were only moving to self-managed if our MBNA debt proves unenforceable - but having discussed with Mr January we both think we are ready to move to self-managed. We want to force BC's hand to zero interest by making token payments.

January payment to SC will go through and we are planning to move to self-managed from February.

A bit nervous and unsure because I notice from our SC account online that some of the debts have moved and I don't have all the details but I am sure we will soon be contacted if we miss making payments to anyone because we don't have the relevant information.

If anyone who has gone through this process has any advice it will be very gratefully received

  • I'm gonna go for the big £1 1st week £2 2nd week challenge as long as I can (should be ok if my extra work keeps up as it did last year) then if and when it gets to much put in half the amount...so if it was £20 a week and things were a bit tight I'd put in £10 and same with the big £50 weeks....and if I found any extra pounds at end of week and had the extra work money comming in (I get paid that weekly as opposed to main job which is monthly) I'd bung them into the challenge pot too...so first weeks £1 is currently in it's pot! wish me luck!

Were with HSBC, we have a standard account, no overdraft and no issues when we opened the account. In recent years, they even upgraded us to a n advance account (again with no OD).

Go into your branch and explain the situation, as long as there is no OD in place, they have no reason to refuse you.
