Remote access laptop

I want to help a non techy friend with laptop issues and thought remote access might be the way to do it, but don't know where to start apart from Google.

Main areas will be installing programs, setting up security and resolving any problems with general operation.

Any suggestions of how to do this or what to use?

Teamviewer is very useful for this. Talk them through installing it and then you'll be able to fully remote control their PC. https://www.teamviewer.com

I third teamviewer, currently the best remote access application on the market. The free edition doesn't seem to have any general limitations, so will be perfect for what you need.

You have two options for setting it up:
    1) Set up unattended access, which means the host does not have to give you access. You add the host to your account, and you can log into the host as and when needed (obviously has to be powered on and connected to the internet).

    2) Requires the host to generate a key which you will use to connect to the session. This is more of a one-time method, as you may need the host to regenerate a new key each time you want to connect.
