Council Tax:

Not sure if this is in the right place or not, just a quick question, the council tax you pay on your house, is the amount you pay for the year based on two adults living there, I know a single person discount exists which is why I have asked this, do they assume there is two adults and the amount is for that as I think you have to apply for the 25% discount separate if you want it?.

From Gov.uk:A full Council Tax bill is based on at least 2 adults living in a home. Spouses and partners who live together are jointly responsible for paying the bill.
You’ll get 25% off your bill if you count as an adult for Council Tax and either:- you live on your own
- no-one else in your home counts as an adult

Brilliant I thought that was the way, I was just worried that we wasn't paying the correct amount but going by that information it seems we should be, the only reduction we have ever had was when we wasn't working.0

Strictly speaking the regulations allow for the council to automatically apply a discount if they have sufficient indication it should be applied - that being said , most council's will keep away from granting something unless they have clear evidence which is why they ask for application forms to be completed.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0

I know you get the 25% off if you are the only adult but why do you have to pay the full price if there are two, would this still be the case if only one of you is working.0

The 25% discount is for single adults living in a property.would this still be the case if only one of you is working.
People who are severely mentally impaired, and live-in carers who aren’t family members aren't counted for council tax.0
