Smelly Bin Cupboard

Hi, I've searched through all the forums for an answer but I have only found answers for wheelie bins.

We have a cupboard outside our door for our rubbish. During the summer it has began to stink so bad!

I have emptied all of the rubbish out, scrubbed it with dettol, bleach, used a bin cleaner, sprinkled a powder for bins but nothing works! I've done this all at separate times btw.

I think the cause has been from my cats litter, I use nappy sacks to put my kitty's waste and then they go into two bags. But this isn't doing anything to stop the bags from smelling.

Does anyone have this problem with a smelly outside cupboard?

I can't bare people coming to the front door and having to smell the rancid smell.

Thanks

Do you have a bin in there? Or is it just the rubbish in bags IYSWIM?

Meat packaging can smell too - wash it, and things like yoghurt pots before putting them out.

You might find an air tight box for smelly rubbish would help, and put it in with the rest just before collection.

No it's just rubbish bags that go straight in there, not a bin to put them in. It's a short cupboard so would have trouble putting a bin in there.

Thank you. We do have a bin for recycling food which we use and all of the recycling goes into the appropriate boxes which aren't in the cupboard.

Are you tying all the bags so they are air tight?

I'm tying them as tight as possible. Can't really say that they're "air tight"

It's easy to see if they are air tight as they stay fat when you squash them gently. I normally tie two sides together, but if I had a smell problem would change to gathering the whole top and tying a knot in it like this: http://www.lubanpack.com/images/blue-garbage-bags.jpg

You could try putting a bit of bicarbonate of soda in the bottom of the bag before you use it? The powder absorbs smells and it'll also soak up any liquid that might leak out and make a mess and/or stink. Or possibly cat litter instead?
    Looking ahead

My guess would be that over the years some liquid has oozed out of the bags and soaked into the base of the cupboard. Bleaching the base again and again and again might be the answer. Good luck, you'll get there but it might take some persistence. One of the best bits of advice I've ever read on clearing up an old problem is that it took a while to get like that, so you can realistically expect it to take a while to cure.
    Better is good enough.
