Council tax application

Hi,

I've just applied for council tax as I've finished being a student. I'm a single mum living on tax credits and HB.

I've just received a letter from council tax saying I am unable to receive council tax support and the reason being: "unable to delete registered period"

What does this mean?

According to the sites entitled to etc I am eligible for council tax support?

Please can someone explain this?
thanks

Perhaps it means that you haven't provided evidence that you are no longer a student. Just a guess :)

Computer probably got confused. You might still be considered a full time student until the end of July although the course has finished.

It's a reason which is used by the council for their internal purposes so only they can tell you specifically what it means.

I would agree with the other posts that it's most likely caused by you still being recorded as a full time student on the council tax account.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • Thanks all, I'm not still classed as a student as I've already had an updated letter from them with full payment requested from the day after my course finished. HB also already had knowledge my student status had come to an end without me doing anything. I'll call them though and find out as I don't want to have to apply all over again. Ive been stung before as I wasn't receiving it as didn't know I had to contact council directly and not just HB to apply for CTB even though I was entitled to it, ended up with a hefty bill that I shouldn't have had to pay...

There are 2 departments here. The Council Tax Department and the Benefits Department.

The Benefits Department have processed your change of circumstances and have probably (but not definitely) sent a memo to Council Tax informing them you are no longer a student. The Council Tax Department are yet to update their system so Benefits can't award you any help until this is done.

I would contact the Council Tax Department to make them aware you are no longer a student.

    What might happen next.

The Council Tax Department will remove your student exemption and charge you full Council Tax.

They might send a memo to Benefits advising them to award you Council Tax Support - they might not do this.

You might end up with a full demand for Council Tax.

You might have to contact the Benefits Department again so they can then process your claim and award you support once your exemption is removed.

I should add that at my Council we are all trained as Council Tax Officers as well as Benefits Officers so all the updating of Benefits and Council Tax is done at the same time by the same person to stop unwanted demands etc.

Most but not all Council now no longer award 100% Council Tax Support so you might end up with a demand for 30% or more or less of your Council Tax to pay.

PS Started typing this before your 2.45pm reply!
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.
