Morning
We are currently buying a house that is going through probate. The inheritance tax was paid nearly 2 weeks ago. We are just wondering how long it has taken for people to then receive the grant certificate? The estate agent said he was expecting it the week just gone and our solicitor said estate agents are always optimistic!
Any idea?

I would hope four to eight weeks, but rumour has it there are delays at the Probate Registry.Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

We have just received the grant of probate for my MIL. She died at the beginning of May and the forms were sent off to the probate office, having sworn at a local solicitors, aprox 3 weeks ago.0

Very true
OP you need to be patient because Granting Probate is not a civil servant opening an envelope waiting a set period, stamping it and sending it back. Reasonable checks are needed that the process has been followed correctly, that you are entitled to be the executor, are not bankrupt etc. Also people take leave in the summer!Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -
If you submitted the grant application to the Probate Registry it is currently taking between 3-5 weeks for them to send the grants out. I received this from the company lodging my application:
"Probate Service Workload status – Solicitors Applications
During recent months, the Probate Service as a whole has received an unprecedented increase in work. This is in part due to seasonal pressures, which has seen a significant rise in applications compared to previous years.
A national system is in place to assess the workload of each registry weekly and to move work to appropriate venues to enable a balanced approach across the service and to enable the Probate Service to return to business as usual as quickly as possible. At present all probate registries are working towards issuing applications lodged by solicitors by no later than 11 to 12 working days from the date of receipt of the application.
Please continue to send your applications to your usual registry during this time, it is not necessary for you to check with individual registries as to their current turn around time as we will move work around as highlighted above
At Leeds we are currently issuing grants within 14 days of receipt and are working towards achieving the national target.
We understand that during this period you wish to know the progress of your applications but in order to assist us and in order to help us to clear this backlog of work it would be helpful if before you telephone to check if your application has been received, if you could please check to see if your fee has been cashed. This will tell you that your application has been received and indicates when it was received by the registry.
During this period, we will provide an update by email every two weeks on the national status and also on the local registry status
If your application becomes urgent, please e-mail the registry with the name of the deceased, the date you sent your application, the reason for the urgency and the date that the grant is required by. This will help us to locate the file and we will do our best to work towards issuing the grant by the date required.
Thank you for your patience at this time, we will keep you updated with our progress"0 -

Just spoken to the Probate helpline and they inform me that it is currently taking six to eight weeks to process the forms & grant probate.Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –
