I think what Meepster meant was that scratches on wood effect MFC are more visible. Our English kitchen supplier does colour coordinated carcases and I agree with this statement. I have noticed fine scratched on the Walnut coloured MFC which I must admit I havent noticed on the white or pale grey MFC of our other suppliers.

Meepster - Hacker is not the cheapest around any longer. Those days are gone. The glass door unit is from the Systemat range which wasnt that cheap to begin with in any case and I find it is poorly detailed for its price point.

  • Really appreciating the replies and comments :)
If we do decide to stay away from a 'wood' carcase, and we definitely don't want white, what are our other options with a Matt glass magnolia door?? Hacker do white, and dark grey. Any other choices out there??
    Continued thanks!

Hi - Can I join in now? ;-)

We do Schueller and they do an upmarket range branded as Next125 which has light grey carcasses with an integrated dust seal and all top of the range Blum Primus dark grey drawer boxes and other components.

The glass doors in the range are very well priced compared to their gloss lacquer doors and are available in both normal and satin glass finishes in 7 colours. I can let you know via a private message where your closest Next125 displaying showroom would be.

I would say any carcase in a light colour is going to hide any scratches well.

Another couple of weeks down the line on the kitchen hunt, and we've had a good look at Hacker systemat with a satin glass front finish. Initially really liked it, but while we were comparing the door against some others, we noticed some of the glass had chipped off the top corner (the glass goes over the edges of the doors so is v slightly 'exposed' on its own). This sent alarm bells ringing in our heads safety-wise and strength-wise (what would happen if you banged a saucepan against the edge while getting it in / out of a cupboard, etc) so I think we have decided to look again at wooden doors which are a bit more forgiving. Sigh. Too much choice out there ....

    Hi Cadbury

I would say you have 2 choices, either find yourself an independent kitchen specialist near you that comes to you via recommendation who does a decent German make of kitchen and stick with their advice and purchase the kitchen from them. Or use an independent kitchen designer, they will work with you to get the ideal kitchen design for you, then with this one design get several quotes from the companies that you have researched to do the products you are interested in.

I think it is sensible to completely separate the 'design' of the kitchen from the supply and installation.

Just so you know the Schueller / Next125 glass doors have a thin stainless steel edge which offers some protection for the glass. If you would like to send me a PM I can send you my Houzz profile details where you will find pictures of a Next125 glass door kitchen we recently did.

Or look for a door made from toughened glass rather than glass veneer on MDF frame and then protected by metal trim.
