Boiler replacement quote

Hi guys, I’ve just received this quote which seems a bit high but would welcome your views please.
Thanks. Boz

Boiler replace and upgrade including installing in the loft = £3,415.00 plus VAT
Drain down the heating system.
Test the gas supply for sound pipe work.
Shut off the cold water supply.
Remove the old hot water cylinder.
Cut back the pipe work and install connections required.
Remove the old boiler from the property.
Remove the flue and make good if necessary.
Install the new Valliant 624 ecotec boiler with a 7 year warranty.
Install the new pipe work from the boiler down to the airing cupboard and connect to the existing system.
Install a new 28mm gas supply from the meter to the boiler in the loft.
Fill and test the system.
Commission and notify the gas safe register.
Install new Unvented Cylinder = £1,732.50 plus VAT
The advantage of an unvented cylinder is that no additional tanks are required.
Hot water can be provided constantly by the cylinder at mains pressure. Also, an unvented cylinder can be positioned in any suitable location as no other forces such as gravity are affecting the flow of water. The fact that an immersion heater is used to heat the water means that there is less reliance on the boiler.
Supply and install a 200ltr unvented cylinder in the replacement of the old cylinder
The cylinder will be connected to the servicing pipe work.
Fill and test the the cylinder.
Commission the system.
Please note this is subject to a main water flow rate and pressure test. Also a site survey to confirm the location.
We have also not included for the electrical works required (this is additional to the quoted cost)
Time and temperature control = £330.00 plus VAT
Supply and install a new 7 day programmer in the airing cupboard and a remote room stat in the hallway under stairs.
Set up the times and temperature controls.
Power Flush due to small bore pipework = £525.00 plus VAT
It is prudent to power flush a heating system immediately before fitting a new boiler to an existing system to prevent possible future problems. Many systems are found to contain corrosion and sludge, even if no flow problems have yet shown themselves
Water Main = £814.00 plus VAT
Install a new 22mm cold water main from the stop !!!! to the unvented cylinder in the loft and valve for connection.
The pipe work will be installed from the kitchen into the boxing up through the boxing in the bathroom, into the loft for the cylinder connection.
Total cost = £6,816.50 plus VAT
Optional additional items:- (VAT at 20%)
Supply and installation of 12No thermostatic and lockshield valves to your radiators = £594.00 plus VAT
Supply and installation of 2No flat chrome towel rails style radiators fitted to existing pipework = £495.00 plus VAT
Supply and installation of 2No new wall mounted shower valves with fixing brackets and chrome pipework fitted from the loft to the valve connection = £792.00 plus VAT

I think you need to get more quotes - that one looks seriously high. If nothing else, they have added a good £1000 to the cost of the boiler install.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

does vary depending on where you are in the country but seems seriously steep, would definitely get a couple more quotes
  • Does appear high, for example thermostat rad valves can be less than £10 each plus a couple of hours labour while the system already drained = 120 (valves)+60 (labour)= £180 so unless they top of the range gold plated?

The quote sings the advantages of having an new unvented cylinder but - you already have a cylinder. There's nothing much to go wrong with them, do you actually need to replace it at £1,732?
  • Looks about right to me for South East, possibly a little high, but not much, elsewhere. To address a couple of other points:

    a. Sounds like the boiler is being MOVED to the loft. A lot of extra pipe-work and the floor may need to be boarded, guard rail installed, light and power may also need to be added.

    b. You may be able to get cheap TRVs and lock shields, but some cheap TRVs can make a terrible noise. I pay (trade) £24 each for Danfoss TRV4s with a non-Danfoss lock shield. I'd allow 1/2 hour per radiator on a drained system to change, allowing for changing radiator tails as necessary and minor changes / repairs to old pipe work.

    c. Changing to an unvented cylinder will give you mains pressure hot water, so, (as stated in the quote) provided you have the pressure and flow rate you'll get good showers without any pumps.

My neighbour had a new boiler put in the loft. When everything's fine, it is out of the way; when it gives problems, it can be much harder to access.
