If my role has been made redundant, can the company ask me to do anything related to the old role while i'm in consultation in the months after? I'm not going to be given my notice straight away.

If you are made redundant you are not redundant until the last day of your redundancy notice so for the time period between being given the paperwork to tell you what your last day is you are still employed by the company. Your roll in the company has not changed until that last day so if you refuse to do anything related to your old role {or if your contract of employment state further any other job within the company} then your company could sack you for refusing to do work and that could then mean you loose the redundancy.
I would suggest that if you want to get any redundancy carry on working as normal but as I said before if you manage to get an interview in the time between getting your redundancy paper work and the final day of that notice you inform who ever is in charge in your area that you will be going to the interview {they can ask for proof of this}0 -
I got a letter saying that as I had been unsuccessful with my job interests, that they now consider me moved to a special 'holding' area of the business, and my line manager is now the HR officer, away from my line manager associated with my normal role. I've been given no actual notice of this, but they are removing me from my current role. The letter says they'll try and find a role within the company, but also suggests that I should try to find an external role, which they'll help me with. They haven't given me notice, so i have no end date, but can this be construed as notice? If so, they're required to give me 13 weeks. I'm confused as to whether I've actually had a letter of notice or not.0

Ask your new line manager where they want you to turn up.
Or you could just turn up at their office.
Use the time to look for jobs internally and externally
It does not look like you have been put on notice.
Do you want to accelerate that or just get paid to look for new jobs0 -
If I'm being let go, I intend to set up as self employed, so I have no inclination to jobseek, therefore would like to go as soon as I can.0

No it cannot be construed as notice, they are looking into their set up to see if {at the moment} there is any role within the company that you may be able to fit into.
but also suggests that I should try to find an external role, which they'll help me with.
This to me seems to suggest that there is a small chance for you to stay working for them but as you may have given the idea that outside of your role now in the company {or the roles you tried for} you may not want to change and there are willing to help if they can {personally I never believe these }
I'm confused as to whether I've actually had a letter of notice or not.
No you have not had a letter of notice {or redundancy yet {that is still to come.

If that is the case and you are not worried about the redundancy I would suggest that rather than waiting around just hand in your notice and set up as and when you want although I must admit if it was me I would hold out for the redundancy then perhaps start on my own in the new year but the choice is yours.0 -
Start the set up process if going self employed.
Check your contract for the do other work clauses.
If they are offering help to move on find out what is on offer, there may be help setting up a business time to do research, dealing with HMRC, contacts. Even if it just printing and phone(say for job hunting) you could use to promote your next move.
You need to establish how they are going to handle the next step.
Find out how long the "holding" will last before you will be put on notice of redundancy.
Then will they want you to : "work", go on garden leave, or PILON.
Back to the original question.
Even though they have taken you out of your role you could still be asked to do things, like training, handover, or even some of your old job0 -
It would be stupid to hand in my notice as there's a lot of money involved in the redundancy, but I hope the holding period isn't too long. I guess I'll just have to sit tight and tough it out. I'm used to using my intiative, but now I'll have to be told exactly what i'm to do. Ho hum.0

An update on this is that they've asked me to do project work for the next couple of months. Whilst doing the project work, I'm still in the "holding" system. I've asked how long I'll be in the "holding" structure and it seems there's no answer to this. At the moment it's indefinitely. They have said however that there's no suitable alternative role for me at the moment.0

Isn't the project role suitable then?Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -
The project is just short term one, a bit of data entry. It's not a permanent role.0
