    I know someone who has moved to Frome and they have settled in really well, there seems to be quite a good social calendar and it's not to hard to get back into London.

    Second above. Frome has lots going for it. Good markets and shops and well placed for travelling to Bath and Bristol. Lots of local independent shops and a lovely feel to it.

    Bridport in Dorset!
    Many of the features of Deal, Kent (where we had a flat for several years) as mentioned above;
    - distinctive and traditional local character, markets and a 'real' high street with many independent shops, and active arts & cultural scene...) but
    - a lot warmer than the wind-battered East Kent coast. And a slightly more bohemian and alternative feel, and without the recent upwards impact on property prices and DFLs* which come with the arrival of the fast (but overpriced) Kent rail link to Deal

    Have you thought about learning to drive?

    Not being able to drive may not be much (if any) inconvenience in London but pretty much anywhere else it will likely be a big difficulty.

    Pretty much anywhere else outside large cities, anyway.

    I'm deep in the countryside, but if I was wrting EA blurb for my place, I'd waffle-on about buses stopping at the gate and a train station only 2 miles distant.

    The reality is that buses are fewer than a few years ago and don't run after 7pm. And how many people want to walk 2 miles on unlit lanes in the pouring rain after work/visiting the city?

    I'm not even 'deep' in the countryside but buses to Salisbury/Ringwood/Bournemouth only run every half hour (every hour in the evening) and the nearest rail station is in Salisbury which would be half an hour on the bus and a 15 minute walk.
