Occupation and insurance confusion

I have been with the AA for a year and always quoted my occupation as classical musician. I am not, I just compose music at home to sell in media and this was the nearest description. I also take photographs from time to time when I am out and about but never work for a client. I basicly see something I know will sell as a stock image and take it. Again, not pre planned. When I was renewing with the AA the assistant on the phone asked me to confirm occupation as musician and I also told her I do take photographs from time to time to sell online. not a client job. She then seemed unsure and looked into it for some considerable time, came back to me and said my policy would go up from the £175 they just quoted me to £210. I asked why having a camera with me when I am out and about is an insurance liablity and she said if I were to have an accident etc and the insurers knew I made money (i don't make that much) from selling images it would invalidate my insurance.

I just asked her to cancel and I will shop around. Why on earth would a camera matter to your driving ?

If you are selling the images then they have will have noted you have a secondary occupation as a photographer.

Insurance works on statistics not logic and so you'll be charged more because their experience says that photographers typically have more total claims costs than classical musicians.

If you want to try and logically work out why that may be then it could be because they are lumping studio photographers in with the paparazzi who possibly typically drive faster, park irresponsibly etc to get to the scene of an incident to "get the shot". Imagine the cost of the claim had one of the paparazzi ever been found liable for the crash that killed Diana & co.

So Perhaps I should have taken up their offer of the £210 quote. They did offer to match my initial quote and drop £10 as well as £20 in pertrol vouchers to match the cashback.

Guess it depends on how much you make from selling the stock photos

Checking the ABI professions list Composer exists (as does Jazz Composer) which sounds it would be more accurate if you write rather than play professionally
