Arrow Global nightmare!

Hi all,
I hope I have posted in the right place about this.
Currently selling our home and looking to get a mortgage at some point in the future, but will rent for a while.
Obtained a copy of my credit file. Saw a defaulted debt on there that was with Arrow Global, a debt from about 5 years ago, no reference as to what it was for!
I rang them up, gave them my maiden name (that the debt was In), date of birth. Yes, I owe £403.68. Paid this in full and they gave me a payment ID reference number. Payment was on my bank statement, so all paid and above board.
Fast forward 2 months and the debt is still on my credit file. Updated mid June saying I have defaulted in June when I paid in full in May?!
So I rang them up, quoting all the information I noted down during the call when I paid the debt.
Nope, never heard of me. No reference of any debt owed by me, ever have being owed or of me ever making a payment to them??
So I asked the question as to why they have a marker on my credit file then, if I don't owe them, and supposedly never have? She says they can't answer my question or help me get the information removed from my credit file.....what the hell am I supposed to do then??
They certainly knew who I was when I rang up with payment all ready to give them??
I have raised a dispute with Call Credit, explained the situation and provided proof of my payment, by way of bank statement.
How on earth can this happen? And have I done the correct things so far to try to sort this mess out?
Any advice would be gladly received.
I know it's my own fault for owing the money in the first place....but I am none the wiser as to what it was actually for when I paid it. I just wanted to do the right thing to put my credit file in better stead for the future.
Thank you

Write to them making a formal complaint setting out what you have said above. Include a copy/scan/etc of the credit file entry.
Tell them if they don't (a) recognise that that the entry was placed by them and that you paid it, and (b) they correct the entry accordingly, you will be taking the complaint to both the Financial Ombudsman and the ICO.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB
