Being a young chap I have decided to take up motorbike lessons in my spare time. Being safety conscious I purchased a leather jacket of Ebay for £70 the jacket seems in good condition but needs some care and a good clean.
Can somebody advise how I go about treating and cleaning motorbike leathers?
I have purchased some sadle soap of the internet this is yet to arrive but I have my concerns about using this as it might damage the leathers ?
Can you please suggest a technique & products that you would recommend ?

As a one-time horse rider and also having run a Yamaha 600 cc bike for years (I was the original 'born-again Rocker' granny stuck in a time warp - I'd get pulled over in routine checks and the minute I took my helmet off revealing the grey hair and the wrinkles, the police would just raise their eyes heavenwards and wave me on) I would say that any product suitable for cleaning and preserving saddles cannot do any harm to bike leathers.
I regularly used good quality babywipes to clean my gear. If they're safe for a baby's skin, they'll not hurt a dead cow's skin. Perhaps ask at your local saddler but talk to the man who actually makes the tack, not his Saturday girl assistant. Hope that helps and remember the bikers' motto - always keep the rubber side down!0 -
I use a small tub of Blackbird Leather cleaner which I picked up at a BMF show or suchlike - it's especially designed for bike leathers. I do recall reading someplace that you shouldn't use saddle soap on bike leathers bu I can't remember why you shouldn't:o. You could try your local bike shop for a good product.
Anyway, I use a non-stick pot scrubber (the kind that one side is a normal sponge and the other side is a bit rougher) and rub in the wax with the sponge. More stubborn bits get a gentle scrub with the rough side of the sponge.
For cleaning my helmet I use baby shampoo on the removable foam bits and leave them to dry in the airing cupboard overnight. Visors are much easier to clean if you leave a bit of damp kitchen roll over them for a bit before trying to clean - this also works well for cleaning fairings.
Have fun!0 -
