When does the cap change to £20k?

When does the Ben cap go down to £20k please?

Is it right now? Or is it for new claims from now on?

Someone said it will be in a few months yet, is that right?

The legislation to reduce the benefit cap hasn't been introduced as yet. I expect it to effect from the start of the next financial year, April 2016.

Edit: just to clarify. The legislation was yesterday laid before Parliament in the form of the Welfare Reform and Work Bill 2015-16 but has yet to be passed into law.

you would only lose if you receive more than 20k in benefits and don't work.
any household with a disabled member is exempt.

That's correct. Until the new cap is put into place the current levels will still apply.

The new levels are to be:

£20,000 (Greater London: £23,000) where the current level is £26,000
£13,400 (Greater London: £15,410) where the current level is £18,200

So it's still £26k countrywide until April 2016?

Are the lower figures for single people and the higher ones for couples?

If they can't manage on £20k tax free then they can always find a job and earn some more cash.
