get it to boot into 'safe mode'. Different method for different computers but it normally involves pressing one of the 'F' keys.

Find out which one works for your system and see if it will boot into safe mode. Go from there.

My Windows7 randomly shuts itself down every now and then, I put it down to the hardware playing up.

Check to see what software and processes are loading when windows
starts. Remove anything that you dont recognise from the startup and then reboot.

Sounds like your hard disk is failing.

I don't know how experienced you are, but this is the easiest way to find out I think.
You can check to see if the hard disk is failing by looking at the error log in the event viewer. Click the round windows symbol at the bottom left hand corner of the screen and in the[search programs and files] field, type "event viewer". When event viewer opens click [Windows Logs] in the left hand column then [System]. In the middle of the screen are the events. Look for red coloured ones where the word "disk" is in the "source" column. Click on the actual events to reveal more info on them and read in the [General] and [Details] tabs.

    Is it a Dell computer?
If so there is the Pre-boot diagnostic tool that you can access also. When you start your computer, just as the black screen comes on with the Dell logo, press F12 at the top of your keyboard. Then arrow down with the arrow keys to the [diagnostic test] and press enter. The system will go through a test to see what's what.

Run chkdsk /f from the command prompt to check and fix the disk, if that's possible.
