Dress cleaning help!

Was given a bridesmaid dress to wear at a friends wedding but it absolutely stinks of cigarette smoke. It says it's dry clean only and the fabric is 100% acetate and the lining 100% polyester it is currently outside airing but I was wondering if I can wash it either in the bath or handwash in machine?
Or any other ideas how to get the smell out - the wedding is tomorrow!

Silk wash on the washer or lowest temp possible, chuck in some Dettol laundry wash (with some detergent) and hope for the best! Lower the spin speed so it doesn't come out too crumpled.
A lot of things say dry clean only but most things still come out ok.0 -
I washed my wedding dress in a duvet cover on a silk wash with the lowest spin setting and it came out beautifully.Overcome the notion that you must be ordinary. It robs you of the chance to be extraordinary!Goal Weight 140lb Starting Weight: 160lb Current Weight 145lb0

But if it doesn't come out ok you will have ruined it, and the bride won't be happy at all!
I'd spray the inside of the fabric with some diluted vodka (50/50) and then leave them hanging in the fresh air all day. Tonight bring it in and seal it in a plastic bag with a dryer sheet until you need it tomorrow. If it still smells then, try spraying it with febreze or oust before wearing it.
Good luck - one day isn't very long to get rid of a strong odour!0 -
I wouldn't risk washing it! What would you do if it went badly wrong, seeing as the wedding is tomorrow?
I also wouldn't risk spraying with perfume or Febreeze as satin-type fabrics usually watermark.
How about putting the dress in a bin liner with lavender bags or scented drawer liners (or any other scented items which are non-greasy and not liquid).0 -
Thanks for the replies. I am a bit apprehensive about the wedding being tomorrow! It's outside at the minute so hopefully it'll have a good air. Will give the dryer sheet a bash too.0

If it's dry-clean only, why don't you just take it to a dry-cleaners? Most will do a same or next-day service.0

Then it'll stink of fags AND booze, surely? :rotfl:
OP you really should have thought about it before now, but if I were you I'd nip to the dry cleaners PDQ and hope they can do a quick clean-up on the dress. I would not risk ruining the dress in the washing machine. What on earth are you going to do if it shrinks in the wash or something like that :eek:0 -

What's wrong with that! Memories of many a great night out
I have no idea why or how it works but vodka is a fantastic odour neutraliser for clothes, and doesn't leave any residual alcohol smells though.
