Artificial Lawn - have I been ripped off?

Hi, I'm just looking for some advice. My partner and I saved for a long time to get our garden (which isn't very big) sorted. We've had a new rear fence, small decking area and artificial lawn laid. The fence and decking we are reasonably happy with but the grass just doesn't look right to me and I don't know if it has been laid correctly. The process they used was to dig out original grass/soil and then put a timber frame around the edge with a baton down the middle of the frame, (garden is square so has a square frame separated into two rectangles with a piece of wood from top to bottom down the middle). They then filled with hardcore and used wackier plate to flatten and then topped with sand. The grass has then been laid horizontally with a join in the middle which I know can't be avoided but the wooden baton which runs from top to bottom can clearly be seen and felt underneath as it is raised. I'm just not sure if this is required and should be there or not? We've had a lot of problems with this company so I just don't trust them and would like to make sure I'm armed with knowledge before i question them and more importantly hand over any money! Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

You should know the manufacturer of your lawn for you specified it. If not, there would have been packaging that would give you the name. Contact the company for technical support - ask them your question.

My intuition is the grass will have been imported from China by dubious folks and sold on through a chain to often cowboy contractors.

I am trying to prepare a garden on a large new home - the thought of digging out good topsoil then sending it to tip, replacing it with hardcore then rolling out plastic grass makes me cringe. Sustainability and eco reasoning make plastic grass a no-no, but everyone has a choice.

    Hope this helps.

The base works seem to have been carried out correctly, astro turf type grass is nearly always laid on sand. IMO

The baton you can see, have they not laid the art. grass over this and around it? what have they done to the other side where they laid wooden batons?

They have laid the grass horizontally and pinned it to the timber frame around the edges but there is a timber baton down the middle (vertically) running under both pieces and because the timber is raised slightly it's like a lump underneath??
  • I'm considering artificial grass so sorry to hear of your problems. Do you have pictures - this might help us understand what the problem is
