And how much is Vauxhall's list price for the gearbox?

Out of curiosity, why would you opt out of getting a brand new gearbox, fitted by vauxhall, to taking a reconditioned gearbox?

At very least the new gearbox fitted by vauxhall will sound a lot better than a recon box having been stuck in.

As I had suspected and confirmed by the OP after you posted the dealer is probably not going to fit s brand new box but a recon box instead.

And I personally would be concerned that all they would be fitting would be a recon box and no clutch and flywheel.

Even cheaper would be to fit a known good second hand gearbox along with a clutch and flywheel (if needed)

It's a very very common issue (happened on our cdti as well and the replacement was showing signs of failing when we traded it in to Arnold shark)
Get yourself over to the astra owners network forum. There was a huge thread on there from people with the same problem. There was lots of advice on thread.

You are lucky it's been spotted before failure. Ours went suddenly and dramatically on the M6 one night taking clutch and DMF with it and causing just shy of £3k in damage. I was incredibly grateful for the fact that it happened in slow moving traffic by an off slip. Can't imagine what would have happened had it failed at 70mph.

    6 speed M32 gearbox = chocolate box.

My advice - get the Vauxhall dealer to breakdown there costs and haggle the 3.5k price down, therefore making your 20% contribution lower.

Also, as previously mentioned, ensure clutch kit is replaced and the DMF is thouroughly assessed and replaced if necessary. All in with the £3.5k price.
