In Word 2003 you can use the Find commend to count/highlight the occurrences of a particular word by opening the Find dialog box by pressing [Ctrl]F or going to Edit | Find. Typing the word or words you want to locate in the Fin What text box. Selecting the Highlight All Items Found In: check box. Pressing [Enter] or clicking the Find All button and Word will display the number of instances of that word occurring in the document. It will also select them so that they're easy to spot and edit. Once the dialogue box is closed, the words will remain highlighted as the document is edited.

In Word 2010 the words don't remain highlighted. So [Ctrl]F is pressed, then the Advanced Find dialogue box is opened. The word is typed in the Find What: box. Reading Highlight, Highlight All is clicked, Fight In, Main Document is clicked and all occurrences of the word is highlighted however when the dialogue box is closed and the document is edited the highlight disappears. This wasn't the case in Word 2003 and is causing issues in my document editing. Is there a fix for this? Is there a way for the highlighting to remain until it's no longer needed?

    I think you cannot.

If you really need this you can temporarily replace formatting only for this word to 'Highlight' ('More' button in 'Find and Replace' window), then replace it back to the original formatting without highlighting.

If the word/s you want highlighted to be changed to another word/s that's all the same can't you use the 'replace' option? Plus why do you have to close the 'navigation' box anyway as it's to the side of the document? Or maybe I'm not understanding properly.
